2021.10.26 21:31 Skankindead The Word Is Yes: #129 - A Venture

From The Yes Album, 1971
Do you ever get the impression that on any given album, even one filled to the brim with iconic song after iconic song, there’s that one song that seems to be talked about less than all the others? It might not even be that bad of a song, but people just don’t talk about it much. For Selling England By The Pound, it’s After The Ordeal, for In The Court Of The Crimson King it’s I Talk To The Wind, for 2112 it’s the entire second half of the album. Yes has a few examples of these, but the biggest that I can think of is A Venture.
Even if you like A Venture, I think most would agree that it doesn’t come up much when compared to the other songs on The Yes Album. To me it’s always sort of been the stopgap between I’ve Seen All Good People and Perpetual Change - and I don't think I'm the only one who thinks that. For instance, I have two books that I mainly use as resources for this series: Close To The Edge: The Story Of Yes, and Yes Stories: Yes In Their Own Words. Close To The Edge had about two sentences dedicated to A Venture. Yes Stories? Nothing. You can find more information in this book about Jon Anderson's ass than you can about A Venture. I don't think that's necessarily fair - but I can certainly tell why. When compared to I've Seen All Good People and Perpetual Change around it, it can definitely come across as just the song linking the two. But why exactly is that?
Well, first we'll have to start with… well, the start. Every other song on the album has a bold first few seconds. Yours Is No Disgrace proudly shows off its shiny new guitarist, Starship Trooper gets right into the action, Perpetual Change has an unusual but striking set of piano and guitar chords, even Clap and I've Seen All Good People have their own unique starts that grasp your attention. A Venture has a very unique opening too - but nothing like the other songs. It slowly fades in with a twinkling piano part, perfectly foreshadowing the Tony Kaye-led piece that's about to follow. It creates a very interesting mood, one that's mysterious and contrasts the rest of the album. But attention-grabbing is not the word I would use to describe it.
After being joined by guitar to solidify the piece, A Venture introduces Jon's vocals - and the lyrics he sings are surprisingly coherent in meaning when compared to the other songs on the album. I was also pretty surprised to learn that Anderson was the sole songwriter for this piece - nope, not even Tony Kaye. Strange, you'd think he'd have something to do with a song that has his piano all over it… The song structure, however, does bring Anderson to mind. It's short, with a basic verse-chorus-verse-chorus format and obvious hooks with his "hide way"s.
In fact, the song's length, I'd argue, is one of the key factors to why most people talk little about it. While most of the other songs on this album get tons of praise from the prog rock community, they all have something in common - they're all over 6 minutes long. With that in mind, A Venture sticks out like a sore thumb as being only around 3 minutes - as if they wanted some filler between the two actually good songs. And we all know the mantra of all prog fans: "Short bad." The simple structure certainly doesn't help, and the fact that there's no real climactic moment.
Now, do I think that it's fair to criticize A Venture for this? ...Well, I'm probably not the best person to ask - I'm as guilty of ignoring it as any other person. But coming at it from a completely unbiased perspective, no it isn't. I wouldn't call it as good as the other songs featured on the album, but it's certainly no slouch either. It's a very pleasant song, and a welcome break from the intense action of All Good People and Perpetual Change. Tony Kaye, as previously stated, gives a great performance here, and not just during the bulk of the song. At the end of the piece, he's given a wonderful piano solo to close it out. Like I said, there's no big climax, and the song ends on a fadeout, but it's certainly very well done. And Steve, as with the rest of the album, is great as well, perfectly entwining with his keyboardist counterpart.
Perhaps if A Venture were a bit longer, it would be respected more. But honestly, I think if The Yes Album were all long songs, it would get a little bit monotonous. So I think I can respect A Venture enough as is. No, it’s not amazing, but it doesn’t seek out to be. It does what it does and it does it well, and while it’s certainly not god tier… it sits pretty comfortably in the “pretty good” tier.
But seriously, can somebody ask somebody in Yes about the making of this song? I hate not knowing anything about it.
Yessources: none lol I’m almost a month late, but happy The Quest release! This may have been a bit of a bad year to choose to do my big “every Yes song ranked” series, but fret not - I will make a post reviewing and ranking The Quest at some point. Probably not within the year, but it’s on my to-do list - right in front of my Vultures In The City review.

Is there a quick way to "reset" time, distance, cals, etc. back to zero in manual mode on the RW900? I know I can end a manual row, exit (after ending the cool down and viewing the summary), and restart manual mode from the home screen (and skip through warm up), but that's a lot of additional clicks.

2021.10.26 21:31 prettymuchwizard Just noticed this in s1 e5

So earlier this season I think e2, we see a younger red walking with the gangsters wives and we hear her say the joke that fell flat. The punchline? "He's not an eggplant, he's retarded"
Well in e5, it does a flashback of daya and she walks in the kitchen to get her little sis some food. When she walks in we hear Cesar say to the crew thats packaging drugs, "and that's when Paco says 'he's not an eggplant, he's retarded"
Anyway, it's something so small but it made me laugh.

2021.10.26 21:31 Fishin4bass Did Legion rape his mother?

I just read X-men 321 where it seems to show that legion raped his own mother. In one scene we see legion disguised as professor X hugging each other and it’s implied they go further before the scene ends. Later Xavier feels a dark presence and runs to Gabby (legions mother) we see her laying on the ground with her clothes ripped.
So it seems he raped her?
That wouldn’t make sense to me though, considering David was in control of himself at that time.
Has anyone ever heard the writers talk about this scene? It just seems very weird for them to do this.
